Description
NexGard Spectra is a highly effective treatment for the prevention and treatment of fleas, heartworm, intestinal worms and the control of ticks on dogs and puppies. NexGard Spectra is a soft, highly palatable beef flavoured, vegetable-based, chew that is readily consumed by dogs when offered as a treat.
Nexgard Spectra contains the active ingredients afoxolaner and milbemycin oxime.
Afoxolaner provides excellent protection against fleas. For maximum effect in the control of fleas, NexGard Spectra should be used in conjunction with daily searching and removal. Afoxolaner is highly effective at killing the most problematic tick species infesting dogs in Australia (Brown Dog tick, Bush tick and the deadly Paralysis tick).
Milbemycin oxime protects against heartworm and treats and controls intestinal worms (roundworm, hookworm and whipworm).
Nexgard Spectra can be given to puppies from just 8 weeks of age, providing they weigh at least 2 kg. However, as its use has not been evaluated in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs, you should consult your veterinarian for advice on suitable treatment options.
NexGard Spectra should be chewed and not swallowed whole. If your dog is prone to swallow treats whole, the chew should be broken into pieces and added to a small amount of dog food.

NexGard Spectra – For Dogs
New products come on to the market all the time, but little have led to such excitement as NexGard Spectra. This is due to the diverse range of parasites it kills and the safety and ease of use of the product.
Nexgard Sectra is registered with the APVMA to protect against dogs against fleas, ticks (including paralysis ticks), heartworm and gastrointestinal nematodes (roundworms, hookworms and whipworm).
Subsequent to the registration of the product, studies have been conducted to demonstrate NexGard Spectra is also effective against demodectic mange (Demodex spp), sarcoptic manges (Sarcoptes Scabei) and ear mites, otodectic mange (Otodectes cynotis). This eliminates the requirement to use some of the older and riskier treatment methods for these commonly seen conditions.
NexGard Spectra is now also registered for the prevention of paralysis ticks (Ixodes holocyclus), brown dog ticks and bush ticks for 28 days. It also provides effective control of pre-existing paralysis tick infestations within 24 hours. In tick paralysis areas ensure you are using every 28 days.
NexGard Spectra does not directly kill Tapeworms, these are a zoonotic infection and can infect humans and more commonly children. Tapeworms are transmitted by fleas (Dipylidium Caninum). As NexGard Spectra kills fleas before they can reproduce and go through their maturation stages, it has recently been given the label claim to kill flea tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum).
NexGard Spectra rapidly kills adult fleas and can control current flea infestations quickly as fleas are killed within 6-8 hours. It is highly effective in the treatment of flea allergic dermatitis and is a good first line therapy in these dogs.
Puppies can start the product from 8 weeks of age and feed it by weight of the pet. It is highly palliative and looks and tastes like a small cube of meat, rarely do dogs refuse to eat it in the consult room, those that do will usually consume it as soon as they get home. It is to be given every 4 weeks to puppies and adult dogs
